The statue – yet to get planning permission – would mark the moment London hands the Olympic mantle to Rio de Janeiro

Visitors clambering up Primrose Hill to enjoy the panoramic views of London's skyline may soon be uttering "Jesus!" … and they would be right.

The Camden New Journal (CNJ) reports on a secret plan to build a replica of Rio de Janeiro's famous Christ the Redeemer statue, close to the summit of Primrose Hill.

The scheme, which has yet to get planning permission, is the idea of the Brazilian government, which will also meet the cost, to mark the moment Rio, host of the 2016 Olympics, takes on the mantle from London.

This priceless line from the CNJ article sums up what many residents will no doubt be thinking:

Primrose Hill Lib Dem councillor Chris Naylor said he wasn't sure a 20ft statue of Christ with his arms outstretched was quite what the area needed.
