Scores of people given free condoms at the party's centenary celebrations have complained that they are faulty
A South African health official says 1.35m condoms given away at the African National Congress party's centenary celebrations are to be recalled, after claims that some broke during intercourse.
Aids activist Sello Mokhalipi complained after scores of people came to his Treatment Action Campaign offices saying the condoms had burst.
He said they poured water into the condoms and "they leaked like sieves".
Provincial health department spokesman Jabu Mbalula said his department recalled the condoms to conduct scientific tests.
A batch of 8,700 boxes, all bearing the South African Bureau of Standards stamp, were delivered to guesthouses, hotels, restaurants and bars before the ANC celebrations. Tens of thousands of people attended the ANC events.
Mbalula did not know how many had been recovered since the recall two weeks ago.
South Africa is believed to have the highest number of people with Aids in the world.
