Scott Parker was a blur of tackles and blocks in midfield while Adam Johnson was impressive on the right
1 Joe Hart
Point‑blank save from Arjen Robben illustrated once more his ability to concentrate. Offered solid presence to an inexperienced back four and was not at fault for the three Holland goals 6/10
2 Micah Richards
Quiet start on his return – he backpedalled to allow Robben to smash the ball at Hart. Appeared better going forward but a mistimed leap wasted a golden chance to head home before half-time. Booked 6
5 Chris Smalling
Calm header from Adam Johnson's corner but then gave the ball away from a regulation pass. Mugged by Robin van Persie down the right, and was at fault for the opener by not tracking Robben 5
6 Gary Cahill
Might have scored after finding space for a header from a corner. Long period of England possession in own half ended with a hoofed pass at Danny Welbeck and the ball was lost. Fine finish for goal 6
3 Leighton Baines
Received the nod ahead of Ashley Cole. Cross too strong after a promising burst down his flank. Will never offer the flair of England's most capped player in this position and also struggled to provide an outlet 5
10 Steven Gerrard
Lasted 33 minutes due to a tight hamstring. Got through Scott Parker introductions as his leader with a poker face. A raking ball that failed to find Johnson was repeated later. Touch also awry 5
8 Scott Parker
What was not required on the grandest night of his career was a stinker and he produced the opposite: a blur of tackles, blocks and urgency. Thundering tackle on Van Persie set tone 8
4 Gareth Barry
Gave the ball away to allow Holland to launch an opening foray and was guilty of the same offence halfway through opening period. Settled down to become the smooth operator of Manchester City 6
11 Adam Johnson
Started on the right of 4‑3‑3. One skip and dance at Holland before unloading a shot that scared the visiting defence was impressive and was also effective when floating around the pitch 7
9 Danny Welbeck
Was always willing to drop off and offer himself. Appears a decent target man as the ball tends to stick. One Hollywood flick did not work but the Manchester United striker did not harm his future chances 7
7 Ashley Young
Swivel and left-foot dink of the ball into the area caused problems early on. Might have won a penalty when John Heitinga challenged him before the half‑hour. Sweet chip for the equaliser 7
