Charles Kimm was hit by car reversing with trailer through gate on family farm in South Lanarkshire
An eight-year-old boy has died after he was hit by a 4X4 reversing with a trailer through a gate on his family's farm in South Lanarkshire.
Paramedics were flown by helicopter to the farm at Wyndales Lodge, Symington, but pronounced Charles Kimm dead at the sceneafter the incident, which took place shortly before 3pm on Thursday.
Charles shared the house with his parents Robert and Suzanne Kimm and his sisters. The family released a photograph of him standing beside his mini-motorbike.
Strathclyde police have launched an inquiry into the death. The Health and Safety Executive has been informed and a report will be submitted to Scotland's Procurator Fiscal.
Yvonne McAllister, 60, who lives in the area, said: "They are a young family and Charles and his sisters are such a nice group of children, I can always hear them playing outside the house."
"The first I knew about it was when all the police cars turned up and parked in the road. When I found out what happened I couldn't believe it.
"This is a quiet community so for something like this to happen is very shocking, my heart goes out to them."
Kim Adams, 54, a farm shop owner who lives across the isolated country road from the Kimm family, said: "We are all very much shocked by it, it's a real tragedy. They are such a nice family and to think something so terrible could happen is horrendous.
"I want to send my sincere condolences to Charles' family. I can't imagine what they're going through."
The farm sits on the main A73 trunk road leading into the village of Biggar and is surrounded by fields and a handful of farms and cottages two miles from Symington.
A spokeswoman for Strathclyde police said: "An eight-year-old boy has died following the incident which involved a 4x4 car and trailer."
"It appears the car was reversing through a gate when the young boy was struck by the vehicle. Emergency services attended but tragically the young boy died at the scene."
