Aung San Suu Kyi's party, the National League for Democracy, says it plans to run in every seat
The Burmese government has announced that its much anticipated byelection will take place on 1 April.
The pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi and her National League for Democracy had already said that they planned to contest every seat.
Most of the 48 seats up for grabs were vacated by MPs who became cabinet ministers following the 2010 general election.
The NLD had boycotted the 2010 vote because of restrictive rules which, among other things, prevented Aung San Suu Kyi from standing.
The government has now lifted many of those restrictions.
