Letters: Images of art

Peter Suchin (Response, 30 November) is right to heap scorn on the waste of public money for the undemocratically imposed and commercially motivated London Olympics and also right to point out that the celebrity artists invited to participate are mediocre. But he is semantically absurd to define a true artist as one who examines, critiques and renews culture. An artist is one who makes visual images or ornaments that everyone can see. If the selected "artists" of the gallery complex are mediocre, and worse, this is precisely because organised art long ago adopted the same confusion of thought which Suchin has inherited.
