Northumbria police say 29-year-old due to appear before Sunderland magistrates court
Police have charged a man with posting racist abuse directed at Newcastle United football club on Twitter.
Northumbria police said 29-year-old Peter Copeland, from West Rainton, Durham, would appear before Sunderland magistrates court on Monday 6 February.
Copeland has been charged with two offences in connection with the Malicious Communications Act.
The abuse – said to have been posted as the Magpies prepared to unveil their new signing, the Senegalese striker Papiss Demba Cisse – is alleged to have focused on the number of black players the club has in its squad.
