BP prediction on US energy imports | Bob Pratte quote from Press-Enterprise

• Reflecting the leading point in a story, a headline said: US will be self-sufficient in energy by 2030, BP predicts (16 January, page 26). The BP prediction, summarised in a press release accompanying the company's Energy Outlook 2030 report, concerned a much wider group, and said: "The growth of unconventional supply, including US shale oil and gas, Canadian oil sands, and Brazilian deepwaters, against a background of a gradual decline in oil demand, will see the western hemisphere become almost totally energy self-sufficient by 2030." Focussing more closely, the release said: "North America's energy deficit will turn into a small surplus by 2030", a collective reference to Canada, the US and Mexico. On petroleum alone, BP's head, Bob Dudley noted that US oil imports "are likely to be half of today's level in 2030".

Tesco still searching for magic formula to make America pay was amended to make clear that remarks from Bob Pratte were not made to the Guardian, but were taken from his column in southern California's Press-Enterprise newspaper.
